Garden Tips

It has been extremely dry.  If you have put in any new plants this year, remember to water them. They need to be babied their first year.  If you water your grass, remember to water infrequently and deeply.  Use the two step process. Break your watering time into two cycles allowing the water to soak into the ground before starting the second cycle.  The ground can only absorb so much water at one time and then it just runs off.  By using the two step cycle, you minimize your water runoff and maximize your water usage.  If for some reason you can not water, remember, with out water, your lawn just turns brown and goes dormant.  It does not die. Also, through this heat, keep mowing your grass long.  It helps keep down weeds and cuts down on the amount of watering required for the lawn.

Fall is a great time to aerate and overseed your lawn.  Fall seeding gives your lawn 10 months to develop roots before the heat of next summer.  Call Bricks and Blossoms Landscaping for aerating and overseeding your lawn.

Organic Lawn Care

This year we started an organic lawn care program.  The goal of an organic lawn care program is to make your lawn self –sufficient. Conventional lawn care can wreak havoc on the environment, your health and your lawn. The solution is to build and manage a lawn in the organic way. The first step is to build healthy soil. Healthy soil contains living, breathing organisms whose activities feed your lawn naturally. Much of the environmental costs associated with lawn care can be avoided from the amount of water we use to the clippings we send as yard waste. So think green.

Plants to consider for your landscape

This season I heard many customers say that they did not like daylilies.  When I asked them why, many said they did not like the orange color. There are hundreds of different types of daylilies and hundreds of colors or combinations of colors.  Some bloom early, some bloom mid-season and some bloom late.  They come in a variety of heights and some are fragrant. Daylilies are very adaptable and can withstand extreme heat, cold and humidity.  They multiply every year. I think daylilies are a great perennial.  They are easy to maintain requiring little care and help keep weeds down. They can also help with erosion problems.  Following are just a very small sampling of daylily colors.  Daylilies can be bought potted from nurseries or in clumps from farms.
